Framing a partition wall against an existing finished wall?

I'm enclosing a room off my garage, and the ceiling is completely finished with drywall. I'm adding a few partition walls (wood studs) and I'm wondering if I can attach the top plate of these new walls through the drywall to the ceiling joists. Do i have to cut out the drywall in order to attach the new top plate directly to the joists?
