How do you prevent flea infestation in inexpensive vacation cottages?

So, just this Thanksgiving break, I went excitedly with my cat to stay at a small cottage in the woods of upstate NY. Everything was perfect until I noticed my cat was scratching herself furiously for flea infestation. She is an indoor cat and she did not have any flea issues at home. Apparently it seems to me that the cottage was infested with fleas and while they did not affect me they caught up on my dear cat. She is my constant company and I would like to take her out to different travel situations but I'm wondering if there is any way I could prevent her from being infected again when I'm traveling on a budget to remote cottages which are sometimes a little musty, and foundations a little sketchy. I wonder how the other pet owners deal with this issue and if anyone has a similar experience. thanks for sharing!
